Arms Act in 2005 changed gun manufacturers liability

Mass shootings increased immediately after the law was changed.

With nearly every American industry and product, civil liability can be used as an important check on irresponsible manufacturers and sellers—but not the gun industry. When Congress passed the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act in 2005, our leaders made the gun industry immune from nearly all lawsuits, leaving families of gun violence victims without an avenue to seek justice.

The law, passed in 2005, gave the gun industry what legal scholars refer to as immunity. It provided blanket protection from lawsuits alleging harm caused by the very weapons the industry produces. You could still sue manufacturers, distributors, and dealers, but a judge would almost always dismiss the case before it reached trial.
