Rep. John Lewis, RIP
Rep. John Lewis (1940–2020) was an American politician and revered (ri-veerd) civil rights icon
who served in the United States House of Representatives for Georgia's Fifth congressional district
(dis-trikt) from 1987 until his passing in 2020.
Rep. Lewis has been awarded more than 50 honoraries (on-uh-rer-ee) degrees from universities around the world. In 1965, Lewis led the Selma to Montgomery marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge (brij). He fulfilled many key roles in the civil rights movement including its actions to end legalized racial (rey-shuhl) segregation (seg-ri-gey-shuhn) in the United States. Lewis is also well known for the March books which are an autobiographical black and white graphic (graf-ik) novel trilogy (tril-uh-jee) about the Civil (siv-uhl) Rights Movement, told through the perspective of Congressman Lewis. The series is written by Lewis and Andrew Aydin, and illustrated and lettered by Nate Powell.
